► Mitigating Circumstances
Mitigating Circumstances
Mitigating Circumstances (previously called Extenuating Circumstances) are unforeseen, unpreventable circumstances that significantly affect your academic performance in any exams or coursework. If you are unable to complete coursework by the deadline or attend an exam due to circumstances beyond your control you need to submit a claim for Mitigating Circumstances (MC).
It is important that you follow the correct procedure for informing the University about any problems you have faced so that your circumstances can be taken into consideration appropriately. If you have had serious circumstances that have affected your academic work then you need to fill out a MC form, forms are available from your Campus Office or from the University’s website. You will also need to provide original evidence (e.g. medical certificate) with your form to support your claim. Once you have completed the form and have the evidence you can then hand it in to your Registry Office. It’s a good idea to make copies of your form and the evidence for your own reference.
If you cannot submit the evidence with your claim you should still hand your form in by the due date and send the evidence at the earliest available opportunity. Claims must be submitted by the 28 May 2010 for central London campuses and 10 June 2010 for Harrow campus. It is always best to submit your claim as soon as possible. However, for Semester 9 assessments the deadline is 21 July 2010. Further information about submitting a MC claim form can be found in Section 11 of the Academic Regulations (2009) which is available below or you can get help from the Students’ Union Education and Welfare Department (contact details below) for further advice on how to submit a claim.
