► Assessment Problems

Assessment Problems & Plagiarism

The University will not tolerate assessment offences and if you are caught having offended then it is important that you learn from this event. If you commit a second breach of assessment then the University has strict penalties for this and it could result in your suspension or permanent exclusion for the University.

Plagiarism
To avoid plagiarism you must give credit in your work wherever you use –
• Another person’s work, ideas, opinions or theory.
• Any facts, statistics, graphs, models, paintings, computer code, drawings and any other information which is not common knowledge.
• Quotations of another person’s actual spoken or written words.
• Paraphrase of another person’s spoken or written words.

The most common type of referencing used within the University is the Harvard system. For more information about this style of referencing please visit:

http://regent.wmin.ac.uk/alu/referencing_your_work.htm

And if you are unsure whether you are referencing correctly then make sure you ask your personal tutor, lecturer or module leader.

Collusion

It is fine to share ideas and exchange sources with your class mates. However, it is important to know the difference between sharing ideas and collusion. This means that you must not work with others to share written material which you have prepared, such as notes from books or drafts of the assignment. If these materials are shared then it is classed as an assessment offence for the student who lends the material as well as the student who uses it. Your own work is your own property and you should look after it.
If you are set a group assignment make sure you are aware of your responsibilities and the others in the group.

Cheating in exams and in-class tests

You must not communicate with any other students during exams and in-class tests. You must not take any notes, materials or other aids which are not authorised in the exam paper. If an invigilator observes you with any prohibited materials or sees you communicating with another student you will then be given a provisional mark of zero pending an official investigation. The University uses increasingly sophisticated methods to identify plagiarism and collusion including the use of electronic plagiarism detection devices.
You might think you have been clever to hide your attempts of plagiarism but it can be caught easily and it isn’t worth risking your University future for.

If you are suspected of assessment offences
If you receive a letter from the University suspecting you have committed an assessment offence then you should act quickly on it. You will need to state in writing within ten days of the letter whether or not you would like to have an investigation and the chance to dispute the allegation. You will be entitled to have a Students’ Union staff member at the meeting or even a member of staff from the University. This can help to provide you with some moral support and to understand your case before going into the meeting so you can challenge the allegation professionally. Again please contact the Students’ Union on for further help and advice about this area.
