Disability Learning Support

The University of Westminster’s disability learning support service provides information support and guidance to disabled students for example those with Specific Leaning Difficulties, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia and AD(H)D), long term mental health conditions and Autistic Spectrum Disorder.  They offer an opportunity for students to disclose a disability in confidence and put in place Learning Support Entitlements, which include exam arrangements and accessible rooms. They also offer a range of confidential services including one to one specialist tuition, mentoring and advice on funding. It is very important that you disclose as soon as possible and register with them so that they can put in place support for you as quickly as possible.

Computer Costs Assistance 2015/16

If you have applied for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) and don’t have a computer, or your current computer does not meet the required specification for specialised software, you may be eligible for a £200 grant towards the cost of a new one. Please note that we cannot offer financial assistance for Apple product purchases (Macbook, iPad etc).

The scheme is open to both full-time and part-time students who start their course in September 2015. To qualify you must be fully enrolled home status student (not EU) and have a Household Income of less than £42,620. You must have a DSA application finalised or pending.

You need to provide photocopies of the requested documents as the Student Funding Office will not photocopy documents or accept applications by email.

Students must provide the following documentation for their application:

For Undergraduates, you need to provide:

  • A copy of your 2015/16 DSA entitlement notification
  • Your 2015/16 student finance breakdown letter from Student Finance England or
  • Your Needs Assessment report (1st page) as proof that your application is awaiting a decision

For Postgraduates, you need to provide:

  • A copy of your 2015/16 DSA entitlement notification or proof that your application is awaiting a decision.
  • Proof of your Household Income for the tax year April 2014 to 2015 (for example a P60 or tax return).

The disability support service will email you to let you know our decision. If you’re eligible for help and your DSA application has been accepted, they will pay the £200 grant direct to your bank account. If your DSA application is still pending, they will give you a £200 loan, which will be converted to a grant when you submit the DSA confirmation that a new computer is required. If the DSA deem a new computer is not necessary, you will need to pay back the £200 loan.
